Org. Setting and Reporting
 This position is located in the Office of the Chief of Staff and is under the direct supervision of the Programme Officer.  The incumbent assists the Chief of Staff in his/her managerial and policy functions in support of the Under-Secretaries-General for Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) and Field Support (DFS) by ensuring the efficient editing and processing of documents and reports for the signature/approval of the Under-Secretaries-General and their immediate Offices.

Responsibilities
Within his/her delegated authority, the Coordination Officer is responsible for: independently providing a full range of coordinated and consolidated information; contributing substantive inputs for briefing notes/talking points/background materials and/or records; leading, directing and managing the Correspondence Team; and, ensuring the editorial quality of DPKO/DFS documentation and correspondence. The Coordination Officer is notably expected to:

• Assist the Chief of Staff in her/his managerial, policy and political functions by: preparing/editing letters, statements, speeches, talking points, presentations, political updates and other correspondence for the Chief of Staff and the Under-Secretaries-General; acting as focal point for General Assembly-mandated DPKO/DFS reports and liaising with DGACM to set realistic document submission deadlines; coordinating and consolidating information related to the travel and leave plans of the DPKO/DFS senior management by overseeing the updating of the travel planner; overseeing the preparation of key events slides and back-to-office briefs for both Under-Secretaries-General; delivering secretariat functions for DPKO/DFS town hall meetings; keeping abreast of changes in mission leadership; delivering secretariat functions for the DPKO/DFS Senior Management Team including preparing background papers and decision notes, as necessary; liaising with the Audit and Board of Inquiry Team and DPKO sub-programmes on DPKO-related oversight body recommendations to facilitate their implementation; preparing various written outputs, including the Chief of Staff Conference Report and the necessary follow-up to the implementation of recommendations.

• Contribute to the integrated functioning of DPKO/DFS through the management of the Correspondence Team by: planning and supervising all aspects of the human resources management of the Correspondence Team, including recruitment, contractual administration and performance management, in coordination with the Chief of Staff and the Executive Office; convening and chairing regular team meetings to discuss operational and administrative issues and to keep Team members abreast of the latest developments and directives of the Chief of Staff; ensuring the professional development of Team members by providing ongoing training in drafting and editing skills; guaranteeing, overseeing and coordinating the processing of incoming and outgoing documents in DPKO and DFS, including internal and external correspondence addressed to the Under-Secretaries-General for Peacekeeping Operations and Field Support.

• Ensure that all correspondence and documents submitted for the signature of the Under-Secretaries-General, as well as DPKO/DFS documentation, meet United Nations editorial standards and are appropriately handled by: reviewing and editing as necessary to ensure accuracy, consistency and clarity as well as conformity with United Nations editorial standards, policy and practice; consulting authors to clarify ambiguities and rectify errors, as required; providing submitting authors with guidance/feedback on editorial policies and practice where feasible; maintaining contact with the Editorial Control Section to keep abreast of developments in the United Nations editorial policy; ensuring that the Correspondence Team templates and the document action table are updated when required; training Team members to ensure that sensitive information is always transmitted and stored in an appropriate manner.

Education
 Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) preferably in political science, international relations, public administration, professional writing and editing,  management or related fields . A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
   
 Work Experience
 A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in editing or management including at least three years of experience  at United Nations Headquarters or in a United Nations field operation.  Experience in UN peacekeeping and managing a small team is desirable.  Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the first level university degree recognised by the United Nations.
   
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.  For this post, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required.  Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage
   
 Assessment Method:
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
   
Special Notice
 - Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
- This post is financed by the Support Account for Peacekeeping Operations for a period of at least one year.  Extension of appointment will be subject to budgetary approval.
