The Skype Patent Team is part of Microsoft’s Patent Group. Skype has significantly changed the whole communications business; taking simple ideas about how we communicate and turning them into reality. And now, as a part of Microsoft, Skype has much more to do. Skype is embarking on the next phase of the evolution of communications; in the process becoming the largest global service provider for communications and collaboration. This evolution will provide exposure to a rich and extremely diverse set of technologies and legal challenges.
Responsibilities:
As a Patent Attorney in the Skype Patent Team, your responsibilities will include:
• Working closely with individual product teams to assist with invention capture, implementing a patent filing strategy to protect strategic innovations
• Strategically manage and utilize the Skype patent portfolio to advance Microsoft’s business goals
• Provide support to business attorneys on patent related issues in commercial and technology transactions
• Provide advice and counsel to client businesses on open source software related patent issues
• Support outbound patent licensing and patent cross licensing efforts.
• Evaluate third party patent infringement claims against Microsoft’s products or technologies and provide guidance and counsel to executives
• Support in-house and outside patent litigation attorneys in patent litigations.
Qualifications and Experience:
Candidates will be a qualified EPA and CPA. Candidates should also have a passion for technology, strong communications skills, particularly in counseling or communicating with senior executives, and strong collaboration skills. Patent litigation experience is preferred but not required. Strong software technology and development knowledge or experience, particularly with respect to Microsoft’s products or similar non-Microsoft products, is desired but not required.
Bachelor Degree in EE or CS or significant software experience; computer industry experience desirable; advanced technical degree a plus.

• Experience working with products in a global setting and with a broad international user community; demonstrating cultural sensitivity and a proven ability to work with teams and partners across multiple geographies
