Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust

The Offender Health Directorate of Worcestershire Health & Care NHS Trust is at the forefront of developing and delivering high quality modern health care services for its client group.

The Trust has two excellent opportunities for the right candidates working as part of our health and justice service within a custodial setting. We are looking for two talented and organised individuals to take on the role of Deputy Head of Healthcare within the Directorate. One post is at HMP Hewell in Redditch and the other at HMP Oakwood (Wolverhampton).

We are looking for two nurses with experience of, or an interest in, working at a senior level within offender health. The successful candidates will have proven clinical and leadership skills, excellent organisation skills and an ability to solve multiple problems within a custodial context.

These are busy and demanding roles requiring an individual who is an excellent communicator, who is confident and able to exercise strong management skills to ensure the operational delivery of a range of primary care and mental health services.
The post holders will be required to drive through an on-going programme of development within each of the prisons to ensure that high standards of patient care are developed and maintained, whilst fostering effective working relationships with prison colleagues and with wider clinical and other services.

HMP Hewell (Redditch) was created through an amalgamation of the three former prisons on the Hewell site; Blakenhurst, Brockhill and Hewell Grange in 2008. Each of the functioning sites site caters for a different category of prisoner. House blocks 1-6 hold adult male Cat B prisoners and functions as a local prison and the Grange Resettlement Unit (GRU) caters for male Cat D prisoner in open conditions.
The prison capacity is 1280 prisoners and primarily serves the Worcestershire, West Midlands and Warwickshire catchment area. HMP Oakwood is a new category C training prison in South Staffordshire, housing 1,605 adult male prisoners and was opened in April 2012. A full range of primary care, mental health and substance misuse services is provided at both prisons.

The posts of Deputy Head of Healthcare are central to the delivery of high quality, evidence based healthcare. Our aim is to give prisoners access to health services which are of the same range and quality as those provided by the NHS in the community. Effective healthcare is part of the range of services within the prison designed to help people change their lives and to stop offending.

The post holder will-

* Lead the operational delivery of services within the Prison ensuring safe provision whilst contributing to the reduction of reoffending.

* Support the head of Healthcare in the strategic development of the service in line with best practice in health and justice services.

* Continually develop their own expertise in order to enhance the delivery and development of nurse led and other health services within the prison.

* Have excellent clinical skills and experience.

* Provide clinical and professional leadership and management to the healthcare team

* Be an effective communicator, providing direction to all parts of the service within the prison.

* Have the capacity to manage competing pressures and priorities in a dynamic and busy working environment.
