The Communications Office plays a central role in the work of the Foundations by coordinating and strengthening the public presence of the global network and by helping to advance relevant issues. Communications works to raise the Foundations' public profile by promoting the network's many noteworthy achievements as well as responding to attacks from opponents of open society around the world. The department employs media outreach, publications, and the web to assist dozens of Open Society foundations and programs in their communications efforts.

Purpose of Position
:
The Communications Office seeks a full-time communications associate to provide administrative and programmatic support as part of a team; work is carried out under general supervision. The European communications associate reports to the senior international communications officer in London.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  •     Working closely with the senior international communications officer in work with programs and grantees in Europe;
  •     Assisting European grantees and programs in developing new ways to communicate to different audiences using social media and other tools;
  •     Provide administrative support to the Communications team;
  •     Compiling, editing, and drafting publications, press releases, and website material;
  •     Monitoring and reporting press coverage as needed;
  •     Answering press inquiries and maintaining targeted press lists;
  •     Writing and editing articles amplifying Open Society issues;
  •     Promoting Open Society programs through international media and other outlets including social media;
  •     Researching Open Society projects and compiling data as needed;
  •     Perform research and assist with special projects as requested;
  •     Perform other duties as assigned;
  •     Travel may be required.

Education / Experience:

    Bachelor's degree and several years' relevant experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    Communications or journalist related experience essential.

Skills Required:

  •     Excellent written, verbal, organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills;
  •     Excellent computer skills, proficient in Microsoft Office plus the ability to do advanced media research;
  •     Excellent listening and communication skills with sensitivity to cultural communication differences;
  •     Show discretion and ability to handle confidential issues;
  •     High level of self-motivation and at ease working independently when necessary;
  •     Poised, works well under pressure, attentive to detail and works well under pressure;
  •     Flexibility and willingness to work simultaneously on a wide range of tasks and projects and ability to prioritize tasks;
  •     Pleasant, diplomatic manner and disposition in interacting with senior management, co-workers and the general public;
  •     Familiarity with open society issues including human rights, justice, minority rights, accountability and equity in education and health;
  •     Knowledge of French and / or Spanish is desirable.
