Job Summary
The Legal Assistant will undertake research relating to the mandates of the Section and assist in various related tasks and programs encompassing project design, development and support. This includes general office administration, drafting of documents, assistance with budget preparation and any other relevant duty or responsibility assigned by the Head of the Section.
The position holder will:
- Assist with the development, administration, collation and analysis of Pan-Commonwealth survey questionnaires relating to on-going mandated work;
- Assist in the on-going work in relation to the administration and servicing of the Expert Working Groups such as Cybercrime and model legislation on the Harare Scheme, and other such meetings as well as compiling of reports and papers as necessary;
- Support the on-going work in relation to the administration of the Criminal Law Resource Webpage (CLRW) and the interface with Commonwealth Connects;
- Assist with updating the Criminal Law Section databases of relevant stakeholders and other related online work;
- Undertake research and preparing papers and detailed reports with analysis on a variety of legal issues;
- Assist in project work including administrative and budget-related matters;
- Any other relevant duty or responsibility assigned by the Head of Section as required.
Qualifications and Work Experience
Law Degree
Desirable: Masters Degree in law
Experience in regard to preparation, organisation and co-ordination of Criminal Law programmes, good knowledge and practical abilities in IT, conducting research, collating questionnaires and preparing reports on legal issues, in drafting various legal documents and project-related documents as well as an understanding of development issues.
Desirable: Experience of working in a criminal law practice and/or in international organisations.
About the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Division
The Criminal Law Section of the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Division is mandated to assist member countries of the Commonwealth to develop and effectively implement laws and programmes to combat all forms of criminality, in particular transnational organised crime, corruption, terrorism and international crime. This includes assisting member countries build capacity within criminal justice systems to facilitate the rule of law; promoting international co-operation between states to combat transnational crime and assisting states to implement international obligations and standards in domestic law. The Section also assists with the strengthening of the enforcement, prosecution and adjudication systems of member countries to ensure an effective regime for the delivery of criminal justice. Members of the Section perform a range of representational and information dissemination functions and organise training courses, conferences and workshops on various subjects in different parts of the Commonwealth.
The Criminal Law Section contributes to the planning and servicing of Commonwealth meetings of Law Ministers and Attorneys General and Senior Officials, and undertakes specific work as directed by them and based on requests from member countries.
