Org. Setting and Reporting:
This post is located in the Middle East Team/Middle East and West Asia Division (MEWAD) of the Department of Political Affairs (DPA). The incumbent reports to the Middle East Team Leader/Senior Political Affairs Officer.
Responsibilities:
Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
• Reviews and monitors activities in the Middle East with specific focus on Israel, the occupied Palestinian territory, Lebanon and Jordan; assesses trends which might affect the political situation and the political impact of intra-regional issues, particularly as they relate to the Israeli-Palestinian situation as well as to developments in Syria; recommends solutions/possible action by United Nations.
• Analyses political and related events within assigned area with a view to provide early warning advice to ASG/USG.
• Prepares reports and papers of concern to the General Assembly, Security Council, or other bodies; drafts notes, background papers, talking points, speeches and other correspondence for senior UN officials.
• Provides political substantive and operational support to the offices of the Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process (UNSCO) and the Special Coordinator for Lebanon (UNSCOL), which are two Special Political Missions led by DPA in the region, and, as needed, to the Special Envoy for the implementation of resolution 1559 (2004).
• Maintains contacts and liaises with other United Nations departments, agencies and programs at Headquarters, in particular in the framework of the DPA-led Integrated Task Forces on the occupied Palestinian territory and Lebanon;
• Acts as focal point for collection and analyses of information on political issues of assignment.
• Participates in conferences, seminars and academic fora related to his/her assigned area of expertise.
• Liaise and responds to queries from Member States.
• Carries out, in consultation with the Team Leader, administrative functions relating to the staff planning and budget.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Education:
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area. A minimum of two years of experience working on Middle East issues and experience in backstopping a UN political or peacekeeping mission is required. Experience in conflict prevention is desirable. Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the first-level university degree recognized by the United Nations.
Languages:
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
Assessment Method
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
